How to Potty Train a Boy
Is potty training a boy harder than it is for girls? Many parents swear that it's true. But using the right approach can make a huge difference. The most important thing is to make sure your little one is ready for potty training. Most experts will tell you the average age for baby toilet training is between 18 and 36 months. However, boys tend to fall toward the later end of the continuum. So try to stay patient until you see indications that your little boy is willing to learn to use the potty.
Does your son stay dry for at least two hours? He may be ready for potty training. Does he show any curiosity about the big potty, or seem interested in wearing big boy, potty training pants? That's another sign. If your little one tries to imitate his dad or older siblings in the bathroom - that's when you know he's ready to be a potty training boy.
The most important lesson to learn about how to potty train a boy is to stay alert. If you see any of the signs he's ready, try taking him shopping for big boy underwear. You can find underwear with almost any character your son might like, from cartoon figures to superheroes. Let him try wearing the training pants occasionally instead of his diaper.
Also, let him be a part of choosing his potty training seat. Some boys like the potties that sit on the floor, but some feel intimidated being so low and are afraid of the noisy toilet. Some boys like the potty toppers that fit on the adult potty. It's easier on mom and dad, too, since there's no clean-up. These seats also usually have handles so your child feels more secure, and guards to keep what belongs in the toilet, in the toilet.
Most parents agree that potty training for boys is easier when you let begin by sitting when he urinates. Many potty seats have guards just for this purpose, so the results of his efforts don't get sprayed all over the bathroom.
Once your boy has mastered the potty sitting down, it is time to teach him to stand up when he has to urinate. This is where Dad comes in handy, it can really help a potty training boy to watch their father and see exactly how it's done. Most boys want to emulate their parents, so this can certainly help encourage your child's motivation.
Are you have trouble convincing him to aim for the water when he learns to pee standing up? Try drawing a target on a sheet of toilet paper and putting it in the the toilet, and letting him aim for that. Or you might try using a couple of pieces of round cereal in the water as targets.
When you're potty training a boy it can help to make a schedule for taking the child to their potty seat. Try to determine when they are likely to 'go' by watching them for about a week, then tailor the times you lead them to the potty around when they are most likely to have to use it.
You and your little one can get through potty training just fine. Just be patient, and above all, maintain your sense of humor.
