Potty Training Advice for Stressed Parents
If you are a dad or mom who's at the end of your rope with baby toilet training, there's some potty training advice that can help.
It's probably too early to think about potty training toddlers when they have zero interest in the potty. It's definitely too early to potty train a toddler if he or she has a fit when the topic is even mentioned. Defiance at the thought of potty training is a big warning that your little one is just not ready.
Although current wisdom suggests that children may be ready for potty training between eighteen and 36 months, all kids are not the same. Both of my own children didn't start until after they were 3 years old, and they are now completely trained. In fact, they were trained well before kindergarten started.
So, the first step is take it easy. A lot of normal children are likely to head off to elementary school wearing a diaper or perhaps pull-on training pants. They are going to develop the desire to learn to use the toilet and wear potty training pants like all the other kids.
One sign to watch out for is your child showing discomfort with wet or soiled pants. This could mean they're about ready to start toilet training. They'll soon learn that wearing underwear tends to be more pleasant. One of the best potty training tips I learned is to let my sons lead me - they're much more likely to use the potty when they decide when, where and how.
Speaking of potty tips, the potty training seat you choose is a very important decision for your little one. You will discover toilets that sing songs and have lights. There are also some which are similar to prince and princess thrones. Of course there are also basic white potty chairs that look like the large potty.
You can even find potty toppers, seats which fit on top of your toilet seat for the toddler to sit on. These seats have grips, are frequently cushioned and make it easy for small children to use the adult commode. A few may wish to have this. Just make certain they aren't scared when flushing, since this can be a prevalent toddler fear. Clarify that it's impossible for them to fit down the potty whenever it flushes.
Yet another bit of potty training advice is usually to talk to your child's pediatrician about it. They will often recommend going back to baby diapers for awhile and try it again later.
Forcing a child to use the potty before they're ready can result in all sorts of issues. A few youngsters get into the habit of holding their bowels and end up requiring approved laxatives or even enemas.
There are lots of books and resources that provide helpful potty training tips. The potty training book selection on this site is great for parents. You might even choose to pick up potty training DVDs for both you and your little one.
So, like most milestones in parenting, if you choose to think of it as a potty training adventure instead of a potty training chore, both you and your toddler will have a much better time.
