Potty Training Toddlers - Some Handy Tips

Just about the most difficult thing parents and their toddlers must go through may be the process of potty training. Some children may learn quickly, making potty training a breeze. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case. Sometimes, toilet training is coupled with tantrums and tears from the child and stress or worry from the adult. Usually it is because the toddler isn't at the right stage of readiness to begin training, and you need to give them more time.

Don't give in to old wives' tales or pressure from peers when it comes to toilet training. Many people believe that your child has to be trained by a certain age or by a certain method. That is not true -- all kids are different.

There are some mothers who will crow about how early their child was toilet trained. Don't let that bother you. Most people think you can start potty training between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. But these are only guidelines. Your toddler may train earlier or later than this.

A technique for making training easier is usually to let your little one choose their own potty training seat. This helps motivate them to use it. You'll find all different types of seats out there. Some sit on the floor, while some are placed onto the adult toilet seat to make it child-sized. You will discover seats which have music, lights, cartoon characters as well as other themes children love. You can also get simple, utilitarian training potties.

Also, let your child choose their own underwear. Even though they're not out of training pants, this can be a good incentive for your children.

Allowing toddlers to watch parents of the same gender use the facilities may also be helpful with toilet training. After all, children learn by watching their parents. Another strategy could be to provide your kid with a favorite book while seated on the potty or work with a potty training reward chart to track their progress. One of the oldest tricks in the book for training boys is to float Cheerios in the toilet, then encourage your son to 'hit' them. Of course this is for the later stage of training. Most boys first learn to use the potty while seated.
