Easy Baby Toilet Training: Can There Be Such a Thing?
Parents who are suffering through potty training might consider "easy toilet training" to be an oxymoron. I know -- as a parent myself, I had a really difficult time training my sons. But we all lived through it, and now they are happy, healthy, potty trained elementary schoolers!
So, even if your son or daughter trains late or resists the idea don't fret. Eventually, every child will learn to use the potty. They just have to be ready to learn.
If you wait until they let you know they're ready it will make things much easier on both you and your child. Forcing your child to try to use the potty if they are not ready can add months to the process.
When your little one can keep a dry diaper for two hours it usually is time to bring up the topic of toilet training. Girls can watch their moms or older sisters and boys can watch their dads or older brothers to check out how things are done. This is a sure way to encourage your child, since toddlers often want to be just like their bigger brothers or sisters.
Talk with your son or daughter and see how they feel about toilet training. Some will be totally against the idea (so they're very likely not ready) and others might be very enthusiastic or lukewarm.
If you think your child is ready for training, take them shopping to choose a potty chair and underwear. Whether or not they can actually wear underwear, an unwrapped package of their favorite undies can be a huge motivator for some kids.
Also, letting them choose the kind of chair they really want encourages them actually to use it. You can find chairs that sit on the floor and seats that go over the adult toilet making it kid-sized. Your little one may go from chair to seat over time, or perhaps prefer the big potty. The seats that fit on the toilet usually have handles so they don't feel any danger of slipping off.
Consider using potty training rewards. When they are first starting toilet training be sure make getting to the potty a big deal. Clapping, singing, hugging - all of these will reinforce the positive behavior.
As they get better at toilet training the potty training rewards can continue. Keep a chart handy to track your toddler's potty successes. When they manage to use the potty a certain number of times a day, or are successful 5-6 times a week, they might qualify for a small toy or book.
